Dragon Quest Rebrands in the West
Franchise Returns to Original Name
Renowned RPG Series Gets New Identity
After decades of being known as Dragon Warrior in North America, the popular role-playing game franchise Dragon Quest is reverting to its original name in the West. The change will take effect with the release of the upcoming Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.
The series, created by Japanese game designers Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Koichi Sugiyama, has been known as Dragon Warrior in North America since the release of the first game in 1989. However, it has always been known as Dragon Quest in Japan and other parts of the world.
Square Enix, the publisher of the series, has not yet provided an official reason for the name change. However, it is believed that the decision was made in order to unify the branding of the franchise worldwide.
