What Happened?

A crew working on a construction project in Southbury, Connecticut accidentally struck a gas main on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. The incident occurred at the Exit 15 off-ramp from Interstate 84 westbound.

Road Closures and Detours

The gas leak forced the closure of the following roads:

  • Exit 15 off-ramp from I-84 westbound
  • Route 172 (Main Street North) between I-84 and Kettletown Road
  • Kettletown Road between Route 172 and Transylvania Road

Detours were put in place to guide traffic around the closed roads.

Gas Leak and Repairs

The gas leak was quickly contained by Eversource, the local gas utility company. Crews worked throughout the night to repair the damaged gas main.

As of Wednesday morning, March 1, 2023, the gas leak had been repaired and the roads were reopened to traffic.

Cause and Investigation

The cause of the gas main strike is still under investigation. The construction crew was working on a project to install new water pipes when the accident occurred.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is investigating the incident to determine if any safety violations occurred.
